Intranet and Extranets
Despite their differences, Intranets and Extranets are often used for similar applications. Intranets simply enable these applications within a company, while Extranets extend them to defined communities or third parties. These applications include:
- Collaborative information: Where companies can make information available to users, including company news, training courses or publications, such as product catalogues, price lists, company policies, HR benefits, cafeteria menus and so on.
- Transactional content: Where web applications (such as stock availability, customer quotations, delivery status etc.), reports or standard forms (for example: expenses, holiday bookings etc.) can be accessed.
- Process-related content: Both Intranets and Extranets are perfect vehicles for accessing workflow procedures, project-management tools and company schedules.
- Directories: Where users can quickly retrieve search tools, company phone directories, resource management tools and much more.
- Utilities: Where information backups, security tools, or technical support knowledge bases can be made available.
Both Intranets and Extranets are built using the same technologies and browser-based user interfaces as normal Internet websites.
